100 Years of DOCA Rioja: A Legacy That Keeps Growing

The DOCA Rioja was officially established in 1925, a pivotal moment that laid the foundation for modern viticulture in the region. In these 100 years, Rioja has maintained its prestige through a balance of tradition and innovation. Its ability to adapt to changing times and new market demands without losing the essence that has characterized it for decades has been key to keeping it at the top of the wine world.

But the history of Rioja as a wine-producing region begins much earlier. It is the oldest Denomination of Origin in Spain, with its official foundation in 1925. However, there have been many small steps that the winemakers of this land have taken up to today:

    • 1560: Rioja wine producers unify their labels.
    • 1787: The Royal Board of Growers is created to promote the vine, improve wine quality, and facilitate its commercialization in northern Spain.
    • 1924: The guarantee seal is introduced to differentiate Rioja wines.
    • 1925: The Denomination of Origin Rioja is born, delimiting the territory and establishing the first regulations.
    • 1974: Producers certify aged wines, offering additional guarantees.
    • 1980: The vintage and category certification of wines is introduced.
    • 1985: A batch quality control system is implemented.
    • 1991: Rioja receives the qualified designation of origin (DOCa) and starts bottling at the source.
    • 2000: A holographic band is incorporated into the seals to guarantee authenticity.
    • 2005: The Strategic Plan 2005-2020 is launched to increase the visibility of the DOCa.
    • 2008: New white grape varieties, both native and international, are introduced.
    • 2009: The Maturana Tinta grape variety and the white Turruntés grape are introduced.
    • 2017: New categories are created, such as Single Vineyard Wines and Quality Sparkling Wines.
    • 2021: A new Strategic Plan 2021-2025 is launched to enhance marketing and strengthen its value proposition.

A Promising Future for DOCA Rioja

In 2025, we celebrate not only the centenary of DOCA Rioja but also the generations of winemakers, producers, and families who have worked to establish the region as a global wine reference. And, of course, we raise a glass to wineries like Zinio, who continue to write the history of wine with passion, dedication, and a strong commitment to quality.
